My Journey

At 21, I survived a harrowing 331-day hostage crisis at sea, held captive by Somali pirates. That experience didn’t just test my resilience—it transformed my life’s purpose.

Today, I channel those lessons into leadership and impact. As the founder of ARC Continental, I help shipowners and maritime clients navigate complex chartering, brokerage, and ship management requirements across the Middle East and beyond.

My debut book, Hijacked (HarperCollins India), chronicles the extraordinary reality of surviving piracy. Through media appearances, keynote speeches, and global conversations on maritime security and resilience, I advocate for those navigating life at sea—and life after trauma.

A lesson for life.

— The Tribune

"A first-hand account of facing a Somali pirate's gun."

— Mint

"... an unbiased look at what can go terribly wrong at sea."

— The Hindustan Times

On 11 April 2010, 21-year-old deck officer trainee Pralav Dhyani, aboard the cargo vessel MV RAK Afrikana, was preparing for a promising career at sea when armed Somali pirates hijacked the ship off the coast of Africa.

Taken hostage to Somalia, Pralav and his fellow crew members endured 331 days of captivity, facing fear, uncertainty, mock executions, and psychological torture. Bound together by hope and resilience, the multinational crew survived an ordeal that would change their lives forever. Their freedom finally came after nearly 11 months in captivity.
